Photodynamic therapy

What is it?

Photodynamic Therapy allows the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer, particularly the treatment of basal-cell carcinomas, Bowen’s disease and precancerous lesions such as actinic keratosis which incidence in the population is high. Its appearance is directly related to inadequate and prolonged sun exposure, since the skin keeps memory of all suffered burns.

Photodynamic therapy consists in the application of an innovative medicine cream on the lesion followed by the exposure to a red light of a lamp for about 8 minutes. Diseased cells absorb the cream and by being exposed to the red light, a chemical reaction that destroys cancer cells is produced without harming the healthy ones. The treatment leaves no scars and does not require special care.
